Hi to everyone, could any of you offer me some advice?
I have just had my 1999 C240 auto saloon (49,000 miles) serviced by a local independant MB specialist. During the service they cleaned the throttle body and the engine now makes a whistling sound which varies with the revs.
I took the car back and they assured me that this was normal and how it should sound but another mechanic thinks it sounds like an air leak. Who is right?

An air leak can make a whistle sound, and there are a lot of vacuam pipes around where they have been working. Our cars do not make such sounds

Thanks for the advice, they told me that the sound is normal after the throttle body is cleaned and is how it would have sounded when it left the factory. This is my 3rd Merc and none of the others whistled. I am a bit narked as the service was expensive.
Is there a list of good independant MB specialists?

I cleaned the throttle body on mine not long after I acquired it and didn't cause a whistle. As Malcolm pointed out, a lot of vacuum pipes around there, particularly the one on top of the second branch of the inlet manifold from the rear, probably coloured white and goes to the gearbox. Can't be seen easily from above. Worth having a look at this one. Others can be seen OK.

If you are reasonably careful, you can check for a vacuum leak with an aerosol brake cleaning fluid. Spray a SMALL amount where you can hear the whistle and if the idle speed picks up or falters, there is a leak there!!
