Well, got a 99 A160 avantgarde which is nice, but have been told the gearbox needs some work to fix it (£1800). Only cost me £3700 to buy, so I can trade it in for a 55 plate A200 Avantgarde 3 door auto. Now should I take the risk of gearbox troubles again or have they revamped the model to be better?
cheers

There seems to be widespread agreement that the new model is a great improvement on the old.

Praise indeed. Hope she enjoys as much as we have.

Interesting to see what you can get mpg-wise on a run, once used to it. My brother has the manual 160cdi and Bournemouth to the Wirrel he gets over 60 mpg on the 600 mile round trip. I get 50 plus on a run from the 180cdi automatic if I stick to 70 cruising speed (from GPS that is an indicated 73).

I would love to see what my wife would get out of a manual 160Cdi,

she manages 44mpg out of her manual A210

Agree the new shape should be looked as, as a different car really as I doubt much if anything carried over from the old shape.

We still love ours though

That is an amazing figure for a highly tuned engine. Nobody with the normal petrol engines claims anything close to yours. Have you checked it tankful to tankful or is that just the computer read-out?

Hello

Nope I work it out on what the trip says and how many litres she puts in :) don't trust trip computers... Ive driven too many times on 0 miles in previous cars to know they are not accurate.

The engine is very very lazy and my wife doesn't use anything like the performance. I'm always amazed at the fuel consuption. Don't know if its due to being light also? wings are plastic I think. Saying that even when I drive it it give 37mpg.

I think she would see close to 70 mpg out of a A160cdi Manual....

ooh and it just sailled through another MOT :) having new brake pads and discs supplied via me (as I never did get round to fitting them tut tut)

Double oooh that fuel consumption is using Morrisons fuel so having read other threads on better quality petrol maybe we could eeek out a bit more :)

Over a year on

Well,
As posted over a year ago, the 55 A200 is in perfect condition, the only problem we had was a clunk noise from the steering when reversing on full lock. the warrenty changed the top suspension bearings, but they said this was not a fault, but the A class design did this. it is the smoothest car i have driven, nice power as its the 2 litre petrol version. I always try to drive it, but as its the wifes car I tend to get the passenger seat! which does have a heater anyway! I see they have face lifted the new model, but there doesnt seem that much difference. 9/10 for the 55 plate A200!
Cheers

Glad you are pleased - and thanks very much for this long-term follow-up post. We A Class owners need all the support we can get around here!:D:D

Surprised by those A210 figures. Ours gives 32 +/-1 like clockwork every tank.
