When discussing mercs, a lot of people say "those diesel engines go on forever if you look after them"....Ive got a 98 E240, but being petrol does this mean it's engine wont live for as long as a diesel??

Not really a stupid question.

Traditionally diesel engines have lasted longer than a petrol engine from the same make. This is in part due to the fact that Diesels have to be stronger.

As we have moved to high revving and higher boosted diesel turbos it is possible that the difference may not be as great in the future.

Regardless of Petrol or Diesel MB engine seem to have a very good lfke expectancy, and if you look after it with regular maintenance and good oil either type should last well.

Mark.
