I cant tax my car till Monday because I am awaiting the insurance document but still want to drive it! Will my insurance be invalid if I have a accident?

I think the way the law sees it is...if it aint taxed it has no right to be there, thus the insurance company could and probably would default on any claim under those cirumstances.

You appear to think that driving without tax is fine then as you are only interested in the insurance.??
The only journey you can make without tax is to a pre-booked MOT.

Not only am I awaiting the Insurance I wont have a V5 (green slip) until Monday as I have just bought it and it has a cherished transfer. I will get it taxed at a DVLA local office on Tuesday morning promp. Road tax is a bind but hey we all have to pay it and I have never been late or driven without tax before I am a law abiding citizen who actually works for the Police (PNC infact:) So I just have to drive it home for where I bought it without tax which is about 10 miles away. _

I think we have all broken the law on this small point, you have bought a car,and you just want to get it home. It is not like constantly driving without tax.

Audi

Actually, I have just put off picking it up today, I am going to get it on Wednesday now, taking a tax disc with me, so will be fully legal, you can sleep tonight now Blobcat;)

And after all the looking about for a MB and seeing an appallingly rusty one yesterday I decided to get an Audi A6. I love Mercs alot but in the end I don't want a luxury car that is going to have the bodywork of an early 80's Datsun Bluebird, so my brain took over and said be sensible and get an A6 fully galvanised etc etc. Hope I have'nt offended, the E class was lovely apart from the rust. I still love Mercs and I may get on ein the future.

The advice on the Audi forum is quite good. Not as quick as here in fact this forum is one of the best I have ever been on for cars, very quick responces and sound advice. Cheers everyone for your advice.

The E class was fully galvanised from the last quarter of 2002 (see thread

And, as I sad to you earlier, if you had got one with full MBSH you would have a thirty year rust guarantee on models from about 1999, I think. Something which no other maker will give you.

The road tax will be backdated to 1 feb when you get it, as long as it has insurance and mot i would drive it, by waiting your being forced to pay for road tax time your not using,

As far I am led to believe after 15 years all airbags have to be replaced as part of the service program to enable the 30 year warranty to continue. I shudder to think what that will cost in relation to the value of a 15 year old merc!

Good luck with your A6, remember this one. The A6 and the VW passat have the same engine and drive train, so if Audi parts seem expensive try VW parts - much cheaper but identical.;)

Funny you should say that, because I know someone who had an MG, and they needed some kind of switch. I'm not sure of the exact figures or parts, but the conversation went something along the lines of it was something like £18 for this switch, and the guy at the garage said get the part that's for a mini, it's identical but only costs a fiver. So my chap says thanks for that, fancy charging £18 just because it's an MG switch rather than a mini switch, to which the garage man says, if you get it for a Rolls Royce it's £100 !!
