well after having the idler pulleys and water pump replaced yesterday, i went for a drive and got the car up to temp only to hear that the annoying whine/singing at certain RPM's is still there :(, its going back to MB Centre in Notts when i finish work to see if they can locate this. we know its in the engine somewhere as it makes no difference if we are in drive or not, its most noticeable at about 2.5k rpm so a nice cruising speed which just makes it more annoying.

just had a thought, could it be the AC pump thats a bit noisy its not been serviced for a few years and may have lost some of its lube?

look forward to hearing some thoughts on what else it could be :)

By using a solid bar or long screwdriver, you can place the blade on all the components in turn and place the handle to you ear you should be able to identify the singing component

I have a posh engine stethoscope I bought at a car boot sale..
You hear amazing sounds even on a healthy engine.

singing car!

drop the drive belt off, engine not hot!, rev it and if its gone its one of that lot that spins around! if its still there look elsewhere! starting to rhyme! if its that bad, i mean bad! you would here it scream as "televison or spinning each item by hand , belt off, you would feel it being gritty etc! but you wouldnt keep changing items until you found it! you would run out at the diff! and it still might scream!

just back from mb centre again and they have scratched their heads, but think they know what it is? thoughts are now that its the joint/bearing between that toque converter and the gear box oil pump, anyone know what that is called (if it has a name) and any idea if it can be fixed?

Just sat here thinking about this and wonder if the best thing may be to take it to a transmission specialist and see what their thoughts are?

A/C clutch would be easy to check yourself, drive at the annoying speed ( 2.5k or whatever makes the noise ), then turn off the A/C, this will let the pulley free wheel ( it's not under load then )...

this could rule out the pulley / certainly let you know if the pitch has changed, then it may be this, but I've never heard a dodgy A/C pulley TBH.

If it's singing whether under load / rolling off throttle, then, it could be something in the box, perhaps drop the box temporarily in neutral at the same speed ( this "may" change the pitch ).

worth a try pal :)
