SIs there a cover? ? ?

Should there be a cover plate underneath the engine compartment on my E320 Estate 1994 model W124?
My brother-in-law has a 300 TD (1993 model) W124with a cover plate under his engine and it has kept the engine compartment remarkably clean.
Any help appreciated.
