 The roll bar activation switch is flashing both lights and the windown have stopped sealing themselves after the doors shut. The softop gets up halfway and then stops. I have been told that this is because the ecu for the roof / roll bar / windows is on its way out as a new one is £1000 from merc and you cant return it does anyone have any ideas what the problem could be apart from this?
Cheers

Malcolm (TV) should be able to give you some advice when he sees this thread.
On an aiside my tyre dealer had the ECU blow on his SL320 when it was jump started. He managed to get a second hand one but has had issues with getting it re-coded.

Thanks I heard that the recoding was an issue as I had to give the chassis number etc to merc for the new one.

By the way I just changed the fan motor and the speed controller had also gone US had to be replaced - £354 juts for the speed regulator. i think this had gone becasue sioemone had sprayed load sof wd40 into the fan to stop it squeaking and it shorted out the speed controller - juts a not of caustion if you have a squeaky fan

I will wait for TV's response

Roof ECU

hi - there are 3 versions ( updates ) of 129 roof ECU. Not sure about them needing re-coding if you get the right one for your date of car - just match the code on the unit ( begins with 129 ) - 2nd hand warrantied ones are about £300 +vat from breaker eg: www.dronsfields.com Very simple to change - under rear seat swab - just plug in. Full Merc price is about £3200 less small allowance for returned one. regards.

These units are not coded, there are separate ECU's for Rollbar and Roof, and I do not think that they are faulty at this stage.

hi

I think you will find that the rollover bar ECU and roof ECU are One unit on this car I could be wrong though, Have you tryed to re sync your window as this can stop the roof working,

As I said earlier there are two separate control units N52 for the top and N53 for the rollbar. they both work hand in hand tied together by two lines, there are 17 interlocking switches. Please note that the roof cannot operate while there is a fault code stored. It also requires a min of 10 volts. The top function is halted when there is a malfunction with the roll bar, to stop them colliding, the roll bar lamps flash for this condition.. the same goes for the windows, if they are not down they would collide with the roof.
the fault would seem to be a roll bar fault as shown by the flashing display..
My big problem is that there are 55 pages of info I cant Email, as it would take all night and to print them off, is too expensive for me.

One Question, is the roll bar working, have you tried holding the switch for 10 sec in the up mode. there are firms that repair the ECU's.

PLEASE IF YOU KNOW WHO REPAIRS THESE UNITS LET US KNOW I SAY THIS COZ I HAVE BEEN IN THAT BUSSINESS FOR SOME TIME NOW AND HAVE never FOUND ANY ONE WHO COULD DO THIS
I TOO WAS POSITIVE THAT THE ROLL BAR,WINDOWS AND ROOF OPERATED FROM THE SAME ECU, AS I TOO HAVE OBTAINED VARIOUS "USED" ECUS FOR DIFFERING FAULTS

early 129 had two control units and late vehicles after about 96 when the windows drop when you open the doors had one control unit

There are two on a 063/064 car and they work together, the roof ECU tells the rollbar ECU what to do, Since the rollbar switch is flashing, the roof will only open up to the collision point and then stop. It is the rollbar bit that must be sorted out, even if it is the roof ECU failing to communicate with the roll bar ECU, not easy with 17 interlocks.

Malcolm

The seat belts both sides could cause this problem, as could the rollbar deploying switch located under the rear seat on this car, they are on the rear suspention on earlier cars

This firm can fix them, or exchange.

Due to the high cost involved, why not get the fault codes read. A 96 car will need to be done on a HHT test set.
Only other thing is to try a re set by disconnecting battery for 5 mins

ploughing the tinternet is all very easy, trying to find companies that do "what it says on the tin " aint!! (joke)

Fair comment, then there are several firms in the USA that do it on an exchange basis. And I do know that they do a good job. The chances are that I could fix one, it depends whats in the box, at least there is nothing programable.
