Hi there guys, first post and looking for help...

I've been considering an SL and am looking for a few tips...

I'm thinking of a 1992 300SL 24v but have read on here that they're a little.... slow...? What sort of power output does it provide? What about pwr/weight? I know the bigger 500 and 600 SL/AMG models are quite weighty, but what about the lesser models?

Is there anything I should look out for when viewing a car? I assume the build quality and reliability are legendary MB...?

Also what should I look to pay for an early model, and what options were available?

Many thanks for your help

I'm losing it Prospect,
Was pretty sure I posted on this last night. Must have pressed the wrong button.

Well I would not consider the 320-24v underpowered. The one issue they had though, was head gasket. Most of these would have failed and have been changed by new upgraded one. Other than that, I have heard of no widespread issues with this engine.

Regarding spec., It depends on the year, but leather, airbags x 2, auto should have been standard.

Thanks Pascal... Wasn't aware of the HG problem - was obviously dealt with better than Rover dealt with it...

Anyhoo - have got an insurance quote which has scared me off the 320 - can't believe the 300SL is half the insurance of the 320!

So, are there any issues with the 300? Given it's the 300, and not the 320, this would be 1989-1993, is that right...?

Cheers :-D

I would buy the 500 because thats what I have and enjoy owning and driving, however none of them are poor performers, but of course it depends what you are used to driving. Pascal is right the 320 is quick enough and can hardly be described as underpowered, I don't think that you would be disapointed with the 300 either, its a very nice smooth and relatively uncomplicated straight six engine. None of these cars are cheap to run if you want to maintain them in first class order but if looked after will go on and on. But remember you will have less depreciation and that can go a long way to offset the service and maintenance costs. You can of course be unlucky and have a major repair but that can happen on any car, and at least with the SL you are putting money into something that is worthwhile fixing. There are lots of threads here on buying Mercedes and the same rules apply to buying an SL, if possible buy one owner low mileage full service history make sure everything works.

Most people on here with SL's seem to be in love with them and are very proud owners, probably carrying a photo to show people rather like new parents with a new baby.

Make the move buy one, the best you can afford and the biggest engine you can run and then enjoy owning one of these fine cars.
