Sl 320 1999 gearbox problem

Hi,
I have a Sl 320 1999, The auto box wont change the gears correctly, some times its sticks in first gear, other times it wont change down from say 4th or 5th when I have stopped at traffic or at a junction for example. If you turn off the engine and wait for a minute or 2 it works again fine, until you come to a hill or junction and then the problem starts over again, It seems to be getting worse. I have taken it to Mercedes but the fault has not happened then, so they say they cant do anything about it. The diagnostic says no fault found. Can anybody help please.

The first step is to change the oil and filter.

You have the same car as me, also the same year, mine does the same thing, once in a while,more so if I use the 3 or 4 gear hold. I think it is a linkage problem, I solve mine by stopping and move the selector to N and back to D.
I do not understand the 4-5 bit of your thread.
I would normally post you some speed charts, but I am off air for a bit.
At 62mph check engine RPM
3rd = approx 4500
4th = " " 3150
5th = " " 2300

Hi Malcolm,
Sorry I meant that the gearbox does not change gear when the car slows down, so when you accelarate again there is no power, I have tried to move the selector to N and back to D but the problem Is still there, also changing to gear hold makes no difference either.

From reading previous posts from members with similar symptoms i would suspect the 'maf'...apparently, the maf can have the effects you mention on the gearbox and it doesnt always show up as faulty on the diagnostics.
