Recently purchased a sl 55 2003. It really is a beast! I've got a few niggles, wondered if anyone could help.

The supercharger has a small squeak when under load, i did read on hear somewhere how to fix by spraying something in, can someone remind me.

There is a noise behind the passenger seat, sounds like an electrical solenoid clicking on and off, noice also audible in the boot on left hand side.

Thirdly the steering clunks when on full lock, does anyone know how to cure this?

Look forward to your help.

Regards

Garthy

Malcolm could probably answer this for you.

His 'puter is being changed over at the mo' but will be back with us soon.

Lower ball joints are common on these (amonst others). This maybe causing your clunk.

Raise the front of the car on a jack (be careful) and check for any suspension play on both sides.

Re the noise in the boot, you have something extra on the 55 that I do not have, thats a module where the spare wheel normally goes, I have my MB computer down for the time being, to check on what it is

If you can keep up you might manage a quick wave.

I have a small squeak on the supercharger pulley, mine goes when I acelerate. It's due for a service so I'll get them to check it out.

The supercharger *chirp* is a known issue with the AMG 55s.

Apparently there is a temporary fix (involving a thick lubricant) or a permanent one (change of blower clutch)

It's quite well documented on a couple of other forums.

I've learnt to live with it on mine :(

I've got that squeak/chirp thing too on my E55 - doesn't really bother me that much anymore, and I am told it's nothing terminal. I've got new belts being fitted next week too, so I might get them to lube it up at the same time if that's a cure.

I have found on another forum, that you remove the plastic cover that sits over the supercharger, it just clips on, then put a few drops of Stop Squeak into the clutch, then apparently its good for 5000 miles, will try when I get some and report.

Helen, i think it might be me you see flying past, look out for a dark blue flash of light and supercharger whine ;)

Malcolm, the noise seems to be soming from high up in the top left hand corner of the boot, also audible from behind passenger seat, it sounds like the noise a fridge makes but quieter. Most people would probably live with it but once you know it's there it's annoying!

I dont think that there is anything up there, but I can look in the morning, it cant be the PSE pump as that cuts after 20sec with a leak, see what I can find

If I was you I would get rid of the car.

You could trade it in for a lovely SL320. Do I know of one? Well, it just so happens that .................................................

Would I love an SL55? You bet!

Can't wait for this feedback on the chirp! I work in engineering and would never consider putting oil on a clutch, it's probalby the worst thing you can do! It would be like putting it on your fan belt.

Hey Garthy, is the blue flash the result of putting oil on the clutch? Will I see nuts, bolts and cogs fly past me too? ;)

It's a graphite spray, therefore there is no oil in it, the tiny particles attatched themsleves to the imperfections on the surface, there are several american sites were owners have done this and it works, apparently!

If you see me selling the big issue in a weeks time it's because i'm saving up for a new supercharger!

I will be the guinea pig then!

Helen, i'm afraid your 6 cylinder engine won't satisfly my needs, it has to be V8!
