I have a Mercedes R129 SL (2000 - 22 K Miles). One of the rear polyglas windows in the soft top has a tiny crack that has appeared. Although this is a very small crack, I know that when the hard top is taken off when spring arrives the small crack may grow.

Does anybody know if the polyglass windows can be replaced without having to replace the whole hood which is in excellent condition?

I would have said yes.

Why? My ex wife had a Boxster S and the rear window was badly damaged thanks to some clueless idiot in a bodyshop when it went in for some paint.

Porsche took it to a specialist who replaced the rear window (plastic), this in spite of most people saying it can't be done and you need a new hood.

I have no details about the company, but it was handled by OPC Silverstone, if thats any help?

Yes, thank you that is of help. I have been investigating various companies on the web. Its now time to start calling some of them to find out exactly what is possible.

Rear Window/Hood replacemnt is something that i never budgeted for on a 5 year old car with 22K miles on the clock.

Just got to find somebody who can do the job now.

If you are any where near Watford, try M&M trimming, the owner there had a 129 for 10 years, mention me if you like. He does supurb work.

You are right could not be nearer. He is on the Rickmansworth road ,Watford by the Croxley roundabout, in the side road by the Watford Observer.
His work is supurb, has done many XJ6's and Rolls Royce for me and bits for my boat.

Cracks have started to appear in the quarterlights of my sl320. Did anyone have any luck replacing the polyglas windows or is it a new hood?

Bought my 99 plate SL320 with "recently replaced rear windows in hood" but they are saggy as hell, I have asked on this forum before whether the hood can be tightened (to pull the rear tighter) as there are a lot of bolts on the hood that look like they can be adjusted??
Being an ex TVR Chimaera owner I know there are a lot of specialists out there who can repair/replace hoods and rear windows - take a look on www.pistonheads.com site and go to the TVR forum and go to FAQ you'll find loads there! I've tried FAQ on this site, but there appears to be nothing on it!
Or look on these:
www.martrim.co.uk
www.hoodsgalore.co.uk

While I'm here who's the best for a complete new hood (price and quality) How do the MB and Ebay hoods compare, as mine is getting a bit faded although I will brush some Renovo on it before winter.

Yes I have a Sl 500 and teh same has happened to my car , I have 2 qoutes just to replace the 3 Polyglass windows in the soft top. the qoute were from approved recommended Mercedes Dealers and were £325 + Vat and £580+Vat. The most important thing to note is that Mercedes only sell the soft tops and 1 complet Unit, so replacing the windows will not have the Mercedes sign but they are just the same. Ensure the fitter uses 1,25 mm an 1 mm thick Poly glass Exactly as Mercedes instruct!

Best wishes

I can endorse KHM near Stuttgart. I had my 1994 SL320 done by them last year, a complete hood for 1850 euros fitted. It is indestinguishable from the original, apart from being new of course.

Took two days to fit while we enjoyed Stuttgart and we came home via the Moselle wine route.
