hi all. just wondering if anyone can help. i,ve just taken the hard top of my 1997 sl and the soft top won,t work properly. it gets to the point where the front rail should lock down but it won,t. after fiddling with it for a while i,ve worked out that when it,s in this position if you gently push down the cover flap just a little bit then push the switch again it works fine. also ow when i drive it with the soft top up the warning light and alarm are on . hope some off you smart guys out there can help thanks jenna-rae

If it is locking after you have fiddled the top will need some adjustment, when its locked correctly the warning goes out

The front locking pegs are adjustable and maybe it needs to be adjusted to line up with the hydraulic lock

no it,s not the front locks the problem is with the cover not moving on it,s own and needing an initial gentle push

I can send you a how to check the level of the oil.

Thinking on this, the first thing I would do is to lubricate every moving joint on the frame with PTFE or Silicon, its clear and does not mark and is not greasy it can make a world of a difference,, cycle the roof a few times when done, it could well fix the problem

hi all. have just had a look at roof only chance since i took the roof off as typically hasnt stopped raining. when i open the roof it all works perfect its only when closing i have a problem. as i say the roof hatch opens and the roof comes forward but it doesnt lock. if i then just move the cover a little bit and then press the switch again the covers moves back to where it was before i moved it then the roof locks down , the cover lowers into place , the rear of the roof closes and then locks. the switch remains lit though the roof is locked and when i drive off the alarm sounds for nine bleeps. i.d be grateful for any advice . thanks.

It sounds like one the the soft-top compartment sensors isn't working properly. The gong is sounding as it thinks the roof isn't latched in position. Try operating the roof completely by hand and checking that the rear latches aren't out of sync - i.e. one up and one down which is a common problem when fitting the hardtop incorrectly.

This might help:

Just a point: when operating the soft top keep an eye on the temperature outside as the rear qwindo of the softop can crack if it is operated whn the outside air is cold - my previous 129 rear window cracked across the crease where it folds when I operated it a few times. I have been told that above 10 degrees is fine. if it's cold and dry and you are able then I suppose a quick blast with a hair dryer on the window just before you close the roof would help avoid it happening
Hope this helps :D

hi ya all. sorry i,ve left this a while but i still have the problem. i,ve just been managing by giving it a little help. it is still the same when i,ve had the roof down and then go to raise it the windows drop the cover panel opens, the roof comes up to the windscreen but then it stops. it doesn,t lock in and the cover doesn,t close so the rear of the roof doesn,t drop. if you just gently push the cover forward about an inch and then press the switch again it all works fine. i,ve disconnected the battery but it makes no difference. heres hoping someone has an idea about sorting it, i really don,t want to have to spend a fortune with a dealer. thanks

usually when the roof has been stored for a long time it loses synch,
what you have to do is a manual reset, this teaches all the switches in, very easily done with correct tool and few brain cells,

you do a manual operation with the ignition on,

see this all the time on the 129

The tool should be in the toolkit as shown in the video. It's just a combination hex key and spanner. This is the same procedure I mentioned in post 15.
