this is not a common problem with these engines, all the tensioner does is to take up the slack on the return side of the chain. if the tensioner is weak or timing chain worn, the engine makes a rattle sound for a couple of seconds,when started and then goes away. timing chain wear can be checked by removing the rocker cover and setting the crankshaft to TDC, then the timming marks should line up,
dont know if this will help iv just had a new timming chain tensioner fitted due to having an oil leak with it now the new one is fitted the car sounds a lot quieter my car is a e230 on an r reg
