Sl320 Can Faults

Hi Malcolm,
That was me.... i was asking about the CAN faults as they showed up on the report from the PC. I think you mentioned taht it could also be the ignition switch, ive still yet to get my mechaninc to look at it. The car again is not turning over, and has been parked up for the last few days.

My Wife who works for Land Rover advsied that some Land rovers have the same problem when they park near telephone masts or power lines etc, it somehow drains the battery could this be what is happening???

Thanks

Rajinder

The ignition switch is not a MB recognised fault, though I know of 9 in the last 3 months, this goes more intermitant rather than a total failure.when it starts to go some of the contacts go intermitant losing some functions
You do have a starter relay, that is fed from the ign switch.
you do need a volt meter to test anything, you should have 12 volt with key turned on pin 30 of the relay.

volt test

Hi Malcolm,
I havent got a volt meter, and my mechanic is harder to get out than getting an appointment with the pope!!!! i will try and get him to test the ign switch as the car has started again this morning so i can drive to him instead of asking him to come to my house.
It does sound like this is what may be causing it from what you have said, fingers crossed.
Are the ignition switches hard to replace, if needs be i will but a volt meter and the switch and try to do it my self, as im getting a bit pee'd of with it just sitting in my drive and me having to borrow cars to travel to work.

Thanks again malcolm.

Moving(turning slightly) or thumping the switch should show it up.

Easy yes, take off panel under. 2x 8mm bolts over pedals, 3x philips screws along top edge. when you put back make sure the back edge is engaged in the correct slots, otherwise you will have to wear a size smaller shoes in order to drive the car.

Do make sure it is faulty before you change or try and repair it.
I will let you have the Pin number on starting relay for testing.

Limp Mode

Hi Malcolm,
Do you think that the ignition switch being faulty would throw the car into limp mode though? but it still boggles my mind to how it starts and drives then all of a sudden it goes into limp mode and wont start until it feels like it usually 1-2 days?

Rajinder...
