SL320, 40th anniversary edition
Hallo everybody,

As a newbie to the forum and having just bought a 1998 SL320, I've been reading up on everyone else's woes for a few days and impressed with the depth of knowledge here. Hopefully someone can help me too! http://forums.mercedesclub.org.uk/images/icons/icon7.gif

Several of these symptons have been described before, but before I chase after the wrong cause....

Every now and then, the flashers either don't work at all, or just work on the LH, but not on the RH. This seems to coincide with the wipers not wanting to work and the rear screen heater not functioning at all. When the flashers and wiper are minded to work, turning on th rear screen heater doesn't seem to kill them, all either works, or doesn't. The radio is unaffected and always seems to function OK. Has happened on cold and warm starts, but goes away sometimes after a restart.

This sounds like several other issues, which seems to involve the N10 relay, or the ingition switch, I am wondering if I have missed a something that points concusively at either of these? Alongside this, there are a couple of other oddities that may or may not have a bearing...

One is that, when the hetaing, or cooling button on the centre vents is selected, the little red indicators appear to flicker, if the sidelights or headlights are also on. If I dim the panel lights, they go back to glowing steadily; the degree of flicker appears to vary, depending on the panel light setting. When I turn the sidelights on or off, there is a very slight delay before the flicker starts, or stops respectively. Again, may be irrelevant, but the climate control panel does not illuminate.

Secondly, the Airbag light flickers very faintly but irregularly, only noticeable in the dark, but unaffected by the sidelights being on, or not.

Maybe these are all separate problems, but any suggestions would be most welcome!

Hello Sam and welcome,,both the ign switch and the N10 are know faults for the ones that you describe.

You cold pull the N10 and remove the cover and check for any dry joints on the PCB,, you could also spray some switch cleaner onto the pins (not WD40 but Maplins)

The only way to test for the switch is to insert the relay N10 with out the cover and test to see if the voltages are present when the fault happens

Check the respective fuses and solenoids. Make sure they are fully seated.

Though the top comes off it does not help, its a matter of releasing the pegs that lock the cover on with a thin small screwdriver or implement

Decided to clean pins and fuse contacts first.

No problems since, so maybe it's sorted.

Thanks for the advice guys.:)

If the fault comes back then it should be just a dry joint on the PCB and an easy fix
