Thanks to Eric,Malcolm and Type 49 I recently solved a hard top removal problem by disconnecting the battery for 10 minutes and allowing the computer to reset. The battery had run flat at some stage which probably caused the problem. The problem I still have is that the engine when revved above 4200rpm appears to try to cut out, as thought it is switching the fuel supply on and off. Any help would be appreciated. Sorry if I have repeated myself on this, I mentioned it in the wrong forum, I'm not used to moving around sites like this one and keep 'losing the thread' so to speak.

In neutral the engine will cut at 4k RPM, or is the probem when driving.

When driving - I just took it out for a run and got it warmed up properly to see. Kick down is a scary affair, delayed reaction and nothing much happens. Full throttle causes power loss and the more I tried it the less well the engine ran. By the time I returned home the engine was not running on 6 cylinders even at low revs. When I stopped and restarted the engine it went back to 6 on low revs but wouldn't fire properly above 4000rpm again. This may help.
Each pair of cylinders have their own coil. it may be that one or more are on the way out and giving you this intermittent problem. With high drain on the coil i.e. at higher revs if it breaking down it cant provide enough juice to fire the spark.

Any inductive coil will get hot and will soon fail with just one short turn,as this apposes the induced voltage. In the case of a coil that supplied all of the plugs the high voltage sinks within minutes, it takes longer with a coil pack as it is not in the circuit the whole time.
