Sent car in to local Merc. dealer for annual service and was advised that amongst other things like plugs air filter etc it needed a new fuel filter (car is 1995 but mileage 34000 so service done annually rather than on mileage). Since, according to invoice from same dealer the filter was replaced last July (at 30500 miles) asked at what time/mileage fuel filter was normally replaced and was told every 54000 miles. So queried whether replacement neccessary since car garaged over winter and off-road, and had done under 5000 miles since last replacement. Answer was that filter was rusted through. Again queried why a part expected to last for 54000 miles need replacement in under 5000 miles and less than a year. Answer these parts are not guaranteed and it was just bad luck.
