Sent car in to local Merc. dealer for annual service and was advised that amongst other things like plugs air filter etc it needed a new fuel filter (car is 1995 but mileage 34000 so service done annually rather than on mileage). Since, according to invoice from same dealer the filter was replaced last July (at 30500 miles) asked at what time/mileage fuel filter was normally replaced and was told every 54000 miles. So queried whether replacement neccessary since car garaged over winter and off-road, and had done under 5000 miles since last replacement. Answer was that filter was rusted through. Again queried why a part expected to last for 54000 miles need replacement in under 5000 miles and less than a year. Answer these parts are not guaranteed and it was just bad luck.
Is this acceptable?

not acceptable, they should have shown you the old one as proof of reason of change "did they service the car the last time the filter was changed ?? if yes then i smell a rat, they did it to boost the cost thats what i think

Car was serviced at end of April 2003 (annual service 29100mls) Fuel filter not replaced according to invoice. Sent car in on 25th July 2003 because of fuel leak (31996mls) and fuel filter replaced as cause of leak. Serviced again this year this week (34000mls) and apparantly fuel filter needs replacement in less than year since it was last replaced.

i think they are haveing you on m8 for 1 the part they replace has a 1 year garantee which runs out on the 25th of next month so it should be replaced free of charge, all parts carry a 1 year fail garantee "get a refund" and give them a ticking off your rights have been breached
