Guys
I have found that my rear floor pan is wet on my SL320 , more on the right that the left, what could cause this, my initial thoughts are that the roof is letting in water but also could be a seal that has gone somewhere....
any ideas where and what to look for???

Regards

Hi Raj,
Sounds as though you have a door seal problem, not experienced this on a Merc yet however did have a wet rear floor well on my Renault Laguna,i did check the seal and nothing was apparent, tears wear etc.
But this was replaced and bingo it was fine after.
Best things is get the watering can out with some kitchen roll on the affected area, and water various areas of the car waiting 5 mins to see if any water ingress appears.
Good Luck

Raj young man, do you mean, in the boot, in the roof storage compartment, or behind the seats.

Malcolm,
There was 2 places but i think i have sorted one out, there was a wet patch in the boot where the first aid kit was so i strippes that down and found some metal pellets blocking the drain removed them so that should be ok.
The second is mind boggling as it is just the rear drivers side foot well in the back .... i noticed it yesterday and it is totally water logged, but nothing around it is wet??? just the floor? and i havent spilt anything there as far as im aware....

I think you will find its coming from the top of the screen and running back, will tell you what to do later.

The water normally comes in at the top seal on A pillar, and runs down into foot well, it then finds its way to the back of the car. This could have caused the problems that you had with the ECU.

This is a common fault with either the soft top or hard top or both. you must release the screws that hold on the seal on the front of soft top and apply a sealant.

Hi Malcolm,
If this was the case would i not be able to see water in other places and not just the rear foot well behind drivers seat? i have looked around the car to see if i could find any water trails or damp spots but nothing all is dry besides the rear footwell???

I have exactly the same problem since last year, and have had many head scratching moments on the isssue. I also checked the A Pillar seals and the drainage channel but can't see how any problem there would cause wet at the back of the seat floor area. My latest thought is that it is coming in under the soft top and running into the little flappy thing and then down into the back of the seat area. It is going to be difficult to make an absolute seal where the bottom of the soft top sits on the body. One suggestion from someone was to spray the area where the soft top sits with Pledge furniture polish to stop the water running along the body. This was from a mechanic with much experience on these cars but I just don't know. I will try this anyway in the absence of anything more sensible and continue to look for a proper solution.

Hi Gfern,
I thought that aswell, and so did my mechaninc and his friend who are or have been mercedes workers, But if that was the case then where the flap is there would be wet spots of some sign where the water is running from, there is nothing in mine.... so that i think rules that out but anything is possible, will keep you posted. I have ordered some roof protector stuff just in case it is the roof from anywhere...

Hi Raj

I did the soft top with the kit to clean and seal and it does give the beading on the top but it made no difference to my leak.I will persevere and if I get any further will post again no doubt you will do the same, it's really annoying cause I can see no trace anywhere but have the wet carpet.

Hi Malcom

Yes thanks all Ok now replaced switch cost €92 plus €120 to fit which is around two hours, looked at doing it myself but the contortions required to work under the dash are too much for my state of athletism. I was surprised at the number of connections running from the switch so it is quite an important component linking power to all the sytems. I actually think that the car is running much better as well.

Parking outside with the soft top up, you should not park on a hill in the rain with the front pointing down hill for long periods.

Hi Raj

Back again, I think that the water is getting in under the hood and running down around the flaps, now I checked the drains which are part of the flap structure and one was blocked up although I dont think that is the problem, there are two drains which then connect to one rubber tube with a plastic siamese type connect. The final tube then just releases the water into what looks like a catch tray around the hood mechanism, I can't find any drain holes out of there, perhaps you could check yours and see if I am missing something? The only thing wrong then was a broken fixing for the carpet which creates a hole just right for the water to run into and down the back into the footwell. The passenger side fixing is intact and no wet so
I will seal this hole and hopefully this is the problem, can't wait for the rain! Will report again.

Geoff,
I have looked down there before biut everything looked ok, what carpet are you talking about? Both the drains worked ok on mine as i poured some water into them and watched it trickle out the drain points under the sills. Although mine has dryed up now, i will keep an eye on it.
Ifyou could just give me a bit more info where the place is where you think the water is getting in i will check mine too.

Regards

Raj
