Hello all -

I am new to this forum, so apologies if this is in the wrong place, or repeating an earlier thread!

I have a 2001 sl320, which is fantastic, apart from on occasion there is terrible 'wheel wobble' - experienced by the steering wheel wobbling at certain speeds usually around 50mph. Unusual thing is it does not happen all the time. The front tyers have recently been replaced and balanced etc...so no problems with them or the bearings.

My only idea is that the tyre pressures are wrong - the car is fitted with MB AMG 19" alloys (Dunlop 245/40Z18 tyres), or perhaps tracking needs looking at (though tyre wear is even.......)

Any help would be much appreciated !

PS - Had the car 3 months, first Mercedes and loving it......!

Wheel wobble

I know the feeling.

I just had 4 new tyres fitted and had them balanced 3 times and still the same f...ing problem, sometimes it shakes and sometimes it doesn't.

Also I just had it tracked twice and still pulls to the left.

Previously my car drove perfectly. No shake no pulling to the left. I previously had p6000's and now Sport Contact 2 Continentals.

The only thing is better is a firmer steering as I fitted a new steering damper.

I give up!

I recently had one flat rear tyre which was later repaired. After which I noticed shaking coming in at around 60 mph. I simply went into a nearby petrol station and checked the tyre pressure on all four tyres. It turned out that the repaired tyre had too little air, I mean it was literally 1 psi less than the other rear tyre but the wobbling was already very apparent so check your tyre pressure.

I wonder if it is down to just having after-market AMG wheels on the car, the 245/40Z18 tyres are not what the car had on it when wheeled out of the factory.....
