HI All,

I am after some help, I have a little oil leak which seems to be coming from the top of the cam covers on the close right as you look at the engine from the front? is there anywhere that oil can come from above the cam covers? I thought it was just air boxes?

I have taken the car to a so called merc specialised who are having trouble sourcing the part with Mercedes and have had my car for 2days now.

as stated its a early 2006 3.7lt 5speed auto

thanks

James

There are cam covers on the rocker covers. on the m112 engine. These leak. There is no gasket...it comes in a tube.

It's an M272 Ciaran.

The usual leak point is the cam actuator magnets on the front of the engine or the black can plugs at the back.
Top of the cover is a removable breather shown removed in the picture below. maxresdefault (1).jpg

It's possible this is leaking. On the M272 I believe there is a gasket.

Sure? Was the m272 not 3.5...but the op stated this is a 3.7.

does this mean it doesn't have the breather tanks above the cam covers like the m112?

It's definitely a 3.7lt 5 speed pre march 2006 if that helps‍♂️

You said the car is 3.7. Could be an m112. Can you take a pic to clear this up?

Edit: Yep, that's an M112.

M272 came in 3.7 for SL only.
The largest M112 is the 320.

Interestingly the 3.7 doesn't suffer the balance shaft issues of the smaller ones.

I stand corrected. I always thought they were M272.
Every day's a school day.....

In which case as per Ciarans link with the video clip.

thanks for both of your help, I will speak to the garage as they are currently arguing with Mercedes on what gasket it is. you would think a merc specialist that this is a common issue, so not sure why there seems to be so much confusion, they have had my car 2 days trying to find out what the gasket is called

thanks again

Thanks for the link, decided to tackle this job myself now as the garage I took it to didn't fill me with confidence and wanted to use tiger sealant and said nothing about replacing bolts etc.
Tiger sealant will certainly seal it but they'll never come off again! You may as well weld it if using tigerseal or sikaflex.

Does anyone know the part numbers for the MB sealant and steel bolts?
