Hello all, new poster to this forum. I just acquired a 1998 SL500 with 75K miles on it and one owner. So far the car only has a few niggling issues. One is that the outside temperature indicator light is out and since it sits right above the steering column, I'm wondering how to get at it? Is there a trick to getting that carpeted cover below the dash off?

The other thing is it seems to have a leak under the car somewhere around the tranny and maybe up by the oil pan or one of the pumps. Does anyone have experience with a drip by drip type of leaks?

Thanks for any help.

Remove the carpet bit & push the cluster out from behind. There are 3 screws facing the driver's seat & 1 hidden behind the cover facing the door. Regarding the oil leak, what type/colour oil is it? Black/brown is engine, redish is autobox, yellow brake fluid or power steering. If the "oil" evapourates on the floor after a few hours, then in is not oil at all but just water from the AC evapourator - normal.

Check the rubber hose feom the power steering res to the pump, two screw clips on each end, they always leak from there. Just tighten them up and clean the affected area should sort it.

Dash removal same as Type. Type time you setup by yourself isnt it!!!

Unless the later cars have different dash arrangements, the bulb for the external temperature gauge is soldered into the display.

You will need a small 'grain of wheat' style bulb with solderable connections.

2003 sl500 dash lighting

Hi. I wonder if anyone can help. I just bought an sl500 2003 with 56k miles one the clock. One problem I am having is that the dash lights up during day time and when the head lights come on the dash lights go out so I can't see the speedometer, fuel or temp gauge... It doesn't seem to be a bulb issue as they work during the day even though they're not meant to be on during the day... any help is much appreciated.
