I'm having a look at 2 SL500s tomorrow with a view to buying. What do I need to look for apart from the basics like history and condition?

230s will go rusty too until model year 2005 when they started to galvanise them.....

Could only be a 230, 129s are too rusty.

Leaking struts, Comand working OK, water leaks, rattle in the roof,

Its nice with some of the extras like comfort seats, parktronic, Bose sound and Distronic, so may cars are just basic

Valve caps you can add later

Were they made differently then? I ask because every other model in the range has has corrosion issues until galvanisation started, even the S class.

Many of the panel are alli, and I think the the steel must have been sourced from somewhere else, even a tiny stone chip does not rust, sure even the early ones like mine are clean, the paint comes off easier that the 2004 Nano paint but nothing else as yet

thats good news! I might consider a pre 05 SL in that case!

Having a W203 with some rust issues appearing has made me very jittery about spending lots of money on another non galvanised merc.

Looking
R129s don't rust unless they've been damaged or repainted. The only exception is the panoramic roof which meant the aluminium corroded at the rear edges. Mercs have been galvanised for years - just not the whole car.

My advice would be to buy a well looked after example at around 8 years old with 60 -70kmiles on the clock. All the depreciation is out of the way and it's only just run in!! Then find a good indi specialist to maintain it...............
Hey you're not listening are u?

Seems I've actually fallen for a 350. I also drove a 500 and couldn't find that much difference between them. And, it's the right colour scheme for me, black with black. All depends on the deal we can work out with mine.
