Arrrrrgh! Having read all of this very useful thread after encountering the dash warnings had gone crazy exactly as some of the posts, I have JUST cut most of the funnel off (no tube) leaving about 5mm. Hope this doesn't allow water to get inside...

My foam under the passenger footwell carpet is soaking. And I have an extremely wet carpet behind the drivers side which may be related.

It will take some time to dry out,,,that was the problem, you cannot lift the carpets with out the car looking like this

You can take the seats out, they are very heavy, it only takes 1½ hours to get them out.

There are 5 bolts holding in each set and the multi plug connector.

Yes do not turn on once the seats are disconnected. if you are going to do it then I will give you more details,,,

You can lift the passenger side font carpet in the corner by removing the 1 screw hold the side kick panel and sliding the cover off, by just lifting that corner for a time and placing a block under the carpet will allow it to dry out much quicker

I need to get that torque tool to get the bolts out first and then I will get it out and dry stuff.

So yes, any further details please would be appreciated.

Welcome to the forum, where does one start,if the consumers are still coming on at the start of every drive the there must be a drain somewhere,, the car should go for 2 weeks without being driven. If the rear PSE pump was wet then that could have been the cause as it is on the wake up lines.

It should not be necessary to change any seals unless any parts have been over closed.

Re the boot seals I am doing a complete DIY for this within the next 2 weeks, it is possible to keep it dry.

Re the cluster, not so easy unless a SAM is playing up as well, any chance of a better description on that one

If you need to re-seal rubbers to rear screen etc use GB Pro it is much better than silicon. its available in black, clear, white, & brown

google GB Pro, or see the PDF

I think the advice for the "later" star shaped tube is to cut away the innards at the star shaped end so you end up with a tube with a 4 pointed crown on the end. That gives a clear flow out of the airbox and nothing to stop any grot from accumulating and blocking the drain.

I'm being a bit thick here, but what's a "4 pointed crown" look like ? All I can visualise is Her Madge at the coronation, and her headgear bears no resemblance to my tube.

When looking at the rubber outlet 'end on' it looks like 4/5 pointed. Bit like a rubber holder that my grandmother used to have in her kitchen for pushing her tea towel into as a holder on the side of her unit :)

OK. Its not exactly like madges crown!

Picture a hole saw with only 4 big teeth on it???

Picture a hat out of a Christmas cracker with 4 triangular points on it???

I wish I'd taken a photo of it on the bench.

If yours is a 2004 I'm sure it will be the same as mine so just cut everything out of the inside of the tube and you'll be left with a short tube that has a grommet at one end and a 4 pointed crown/hat/holesaw at the other.

Hopefully that makes a bit more sense????

It looks like something sad lonely men would have used for DIY satisfaction, i'm sure I've seen them advertised in the back of a 1970's mucky book

What a stupid concept when leaves cam get in the box, plus algae grows happily in it.

Unbelievable isn't it. I found that mine today had built up leaves so long they had turned to oil !

Here's a complete pic I found:

That's the one, but I had it my head that mine had 4 points to the star rather than 5 in the pic. All I did was cut out all the bits on the inside to give a clear route out from the airbox. That would leave a 5 pointed crown.

Many thanks guys, didn't think I would get a response on such an old thread. I will cut mine as you have yours and replace. Hopefully not too much damage has been done and I will see no more water coming in.

Thanks, Dan

If you've had water in the air box just check the passenger carpets aren't wet underneath. If they are wet clearing the airbox drain is the least of your worries- see Malcolms pictures for interior strip down to dry carpets!!!

A hah, now I am understanding. Wot a daft design. I never took mine out, I just inserted a finger and twiddled it to extract the fungus.

I think you'll be fine IF the drain is kept clear but if your car is parked up anywhere near trees then you'd have to remember to check the drain every few months.

Forgetting to clear the drain can cause so many problems that its probably a good idea to pre-empt any blockage and cut the ends off when you get chance.
