Hi guys, i've seen a slc 450 for sale which i quite like, the dealer happens to sell mainly SMART cars, and claims that there is no rot or filler on the body work, except the odd stone chip.. and states that mechanically is 100%. it has 52k on the clock, and is up for sale at £4,000. here is the link

Prices on slc's are variable with some crazily high (up to 10k and I even saw one listed for 26k!) and some low (my 280 was 2k). People I've spoken to about these things always say the same thing - avoid the 380s and 450s due to complexity and expense but it is a personal choice. I suppose the best thing to do would also be the most obvious - check the service history and have an independent report done. It does look good though

It seems reasonable but have a mechanicl check on it there are so many things that can go wrong. The mpg will be high but it depends on your annual mileage. Good luck with it if you go ahead. Ron

I bought a 450 SLC last November. It had covered 110,000 miles.

So far it has been one of the most reliable cars I've ever had the pleasure to own/drive. It's now my only car, used every single day and won't fit in my garage, so it's no pampered thing, but I think the car responds well to regular use.

The build quality and drive still delights even after a few months, when in the past the thrill of most cars rapidly becomes diluted as time progresses.

That particular SLC looks to be teriffic value, possibly due to the way things are at the moment. I would say go for it.

Engine wise I think the 450 is preferable. Why? Because the 280 drinks fuel at a similar rate and is less powerful. The 380 has a simplex chain as opposed to the duplex fitted to the 450. The 450 produces ample power to enjoy the SLC and rewards with the burble one would expect.

I notice that SLC has air conditioning and cruise control. I would be inclined to check the a/c functions properly, I wouldn't be without mine, on a day like this in particular. It's unlikely the cruise will work. They were quite unreliable.

My brother uses a guy in New Addington whom he takes his E280 to and who seems to be reasonable in terms of cost and efficiency. Unfortunately my brother's away at the moment so will post details when he returns. Good luck if you go ahead with it and I daresay I'll see you around in it given my folks still live there and mine is the same colour as (hopefully) yours.
