HI all,
Hoping someone can point me in the direction of some info on SLC's or give me a little advice. An SLC coupe has popped up, 1979, all original, 100k miles, full service history and lots of MOT's reciepts etc. I think these are beautiful cars and am considering buying - any specific things I should be looking out for? If maintained properly are these reliable vehicles?
Thanks in advance, Geoff Kakoschke.

Giving up on 190Es?

Look for rust, rust, rust and, rust.

I think this has been asked before. Use the search facility & you'll find lots of info.

I always thought they were beautiful too.

Are you sure its a 500 SLC as these were Left Hand Drive models, the largest engine for the SLC in the UK was the 450.

As has been stated, look for rust everywhere, especially in and around the sills, especially at the rear. Look in the boot....its normally like a swimming pool in there. Under the rear screen. Wheel arches. C Pillars....bubbling under the paint. Undersides of the doors. Bottom of front wings. Bonnet edges, especially front leading edge.

Nice cars if you can find one with a sound body....unfortunately the cost of body repairs normally makes it uneconomical to repair an SLC if its starting to go......its cheaper to sort the mechanicals than it is the body.

HI guys,
Sorry typo by me, it's an SLC 450.
Might be looking at it in the next couple of days.
Will certainly search like crazy for any signs of rust or repair work.
Cheers, Geoff.

Did anyone mention rust??

There are evidently lots of double and triple-skinned panels that are impossible to get at and they all rust. Front wing replacement normally ends up with major surgery. I'd only buy one with photographic evidence of rebuild by a specialist

SLCs are much cheaper than SLs and, as such, are robably uneconomic to restore. Which is a shame as they'e beautiful cars and very tough

Personally I wouldn't worry too much about the mechanics so long as the car has been serviced regularly and has antifreeze in it. There's no rocket science in those old cars and everything is fixable - apart from tin worm

Was absolutely gutted when the gearbox blew on my 450SLC - mainly because it was a genuine car without rust.

They are great cars, not known as Panzerwagons without good reason. And under normal circumstances should go to the moon without problems.

The most important thingto do is find a decent one - ebay do have genuine cars from time to time. Do not be in a hurry.

Hi guys..
Thanks very much for the advice, however radical changes to my schedule have meant this isn't going to happen, even the 190E will soon be up for sale.
Cheers, Geoff.
