Is it just me or are the roads really slippy these days?

I have had my car sliding around for the last couple of weeks. Also, when pulling out of juctions, turning right, I can hear my back wheels spinning and I didn't think that I was accelerating that hard.

I thought I was imagining this, but the back end of the 320 kept feeling like it was starting to let go. Tonight I tried to push it a little further and I was in an impressive power slide before I new it. (I was surprised how easy this was to control)

Is it just the amount of grit and salt on the roads or is it something else?

South Wales also, it hasn't rained for awhile and lots of salt on the road. It is damp however and that I think is the problem. Damp salt between road and tyres.
I keep seeing a yellow triangle flashing away in the dash. I have checked my tyres twice to see if they are on the smooth side of legal but their fine.

Having the same problem, I thought that as we have had little rain, (Pembrokeshire West Wales) that it could be the amount of oil and grease on the road surface and not enough rain to wash it away.

Hi Dave,

The roads in West Wales really are filty at the moment. Had a bit of snow today in Carmarthen, need a good shower to clean it all off.
Never thought I would need rain in West Wales!

Way too much salt on the roads for me to get the bikes out. Had a BMW demonstrator out in November whilst mine was in for service and nearly threw that up the road twice due to greasy roads

Saw a bike go over on the M62 last night. Fortunately in slow moving traffic so he just fell off and wasn't collected by the car behind, but it could have been nasty. Went past as he was picking it up with the back wheen still going round. I think I'll stick to my 4 fat tyres. I can still spin them in 2nd but I put that down to the turbo torque. Certainly if I floor it off the line just I sit there with the wheels going round and the amber light is a regular contributor to my dashboard display. Hopefully things will improve when the sun comes out!

More/less anything will just spin at light's in this weather if you want it to.

True, especially fwd stuff. Admittedly in this weather you can get a wheelspin out of a pushbike.

The W210 240 wasn't that eager though. I suspect MB have backed the ESP off a bit on the 211s - I'd get the odd chirp that would be it, This one I get a full blown spin before it intervenes. Not so easy to control on turbo diesels as you get all the power in one big blob.

Problem in the winter is that if the toys only come out on good days, then things like the brakes sieze up and have to get unsiezed before the next outing! (They do on the Lotus). Last year I took the Jag to the Harewood meeting and didn't arrive as the fluid boiled (One week after a full professional service!).

Silver, you weren't going to take the Jag up Harewood were you? (I've seen a Mk10 going up Doune...that's just stupid)

Turnipsock as I drive on the same roads as you, I would agree, last Thursday evening , one fatal accident just past Arnprior, taxi upside down in field nr Drymen, and another 4 seperate accidents in the surrounding area! and that is in a period of about 2 hrs!

Because of the longish dry spells we have had, when the rain that does come, it doesn't clear the roads all the salt, tyre, oil and diesel, remains as a cocktail to catch the unwary!

Mind you the new road surfaces with zero grip don't help!! just resurfaced a section near me, on a series of tight bends, I think zero grip is the best description!! glad I wasn't on the bike when I found that one, took it out a couple of weeks ago, still too bl**dy cold!
