SLK 200 (2002 Auto) SRS warning light - despite several attempts by MB this light is activated each time I move the steering column in or out - MB can cancel it and have put in new airbag but fault re occurs - any suggestions as to what is the underlying problem would be most welcome (not least so I can suggest to them what needs to be done)

One question, does this happen only when the column is moved in and out or does it happen when the steering wheel is turned also?

activation seems only to happen when the wheel is moved in and out - has happened previousely when cleaning the steering wheel and column. MB said that they had replaced a 'sensor' to identify where the wheel was in its turned position on Tuesday - done under 'no charge' so have not any details of the part.

We do not get many faults on this part of the car, the LED sensor reads the turns of the wheel so that the ESP knows where the wheels are.

I only ask this because the snap ring behind the steering wheel often goes wrong. other than this it could to be a wiring problem. But its a problem the Dealers should sort out on a car this age.
