sorry to be a pain,
i have a 2001 slk230, seems to run fine, but have noticed two gemlins with the rpm, when the car is stationary and out of gear the car maxium rpm is exactly 4000 rpm, in first gear, it also is around 4000 rpm, i don,t drive the car fast enough to determine if this is so in other gears
is it an electronic protection thing or something else going on,

please help as i've only only had the car for a few months, i've checked the MAF probe and that seems clean.

thanks evobike

Yes it's a rev limiter, I thought there was something wrong with mine till i asked the tester when i took it for MOT.

Hmmm...

I've got a 99 SLK 230, haven't tried to see how high it will rev in neutral, but I can certainly reach the red in first. You don't say whether it's manual or auto, assuming it's an auto, what mode do you have the box set in? Don't know if they changed with the face lift but I have the S or W option. For everyday driving I keep it in S and can't say I've ever seen the revs limited to 4k rpm.

Guy,
press the throttle pedal down gradually in neutral, the revs should rise to just under 4000 then the engine will start to hunt ,as if the power is being switched off and on ,this is a safety device to prevent overrevving ,i think it is a fuel cutoff controlled by the engine management system.

thanks guys for the info, its a 6 speed manual, like i said, it seems to drive fine and pulls away just great, i just thought that if there was going to be a limiter, it would be a little closer to the red line, even in neutral

thanks once again,

The neutral limiter is set at a different level to the driving limiter - you should be able to rev at least to the red line when driving.

we have an auto 230SLK. In neutral it is limited to the magic 4000 revs as mentioned above which I had assumed is to protect the gearbox - I dont suppose it would take kindly to engaging drive at high revs. I spotted this when I was revving the engine listening to the exhaust because I thought it was blowing.

That said the problem in gear is a problem. it should allow you to get to the red line in first - its a sports car isnt it! I can confirm that ours gets to the red line in every gear but top, and I havent yet found a long enough striaght road to know whether it will do that as well.

I have no idea what the problem could be but I am sure that some one will tell you soon.
