Hi,
I'm a new boy to the forum so just a couple of questions.
We've owned our 99 slk 230 for 5 years and have decided to keep it for a lot longer.
I now need to change the plugs and all the pads front and rear.
Can anyone offer any advice and guidance, don't fancy paying dealer prices anymore.
Just a thought, the car has always (apart from one)been serviced by mbd.
It has now got 81k on the clock and is due another service in Jan.
Is it worth carrying on with the official stamps in the book considering it's mileage and future resale value, like i mentioned we intend keeping it.
Cheers
John

Hello and welcome to the forum,,Re the sparking plugs, when removing the plug caps lever them off with an open ended spanner over the top of the engine, ,then you will not damage the coil packs as you can by just pulling.

Re the service stamp , why not do it yourself and save the money on servicing if you intend to keep it. In any case the cost of servicing over the next few year will be much more than the value of the car without a fully stamped book,, keep the receipts for oil and what you buy. the car will always sell on condition.

My car is 2002 and I am not paying the £600 for a B service, its just stupid, or I will use a good indie

Yes the top cover comes off,, if you cannot see the sump drain bolt then the engine under tray will have to be removed.

It under the red cover. You need a star key tool to remove the 3/4 bolts to remove the red cover, then you need to use a 8/10 size hex key to remove the two bolts each plug. If you haven't changed the spark plugs for the last 5 years, it long overdue. Meant to replace them after 3 years interval. They are special NGK platinum plugs used to cost £40 each in 2004. It down to £9 if you shop around. Go to motor factor like Lucas or on the Internet is cheaper than at Halfords.

It up to you entirely whether you want Merc to honor your warranty or relinguish it and DIY.

You don't need to remove the belly cover unless you need to change oil. The belly cover has four screws -size 10 hex key, two at the front near the front bumper and one each at the rear, near the wheel. You need to jack your car up to reach the rear screws unless you got a long arm.

The oil filter is on the near side paper type not tin cartridge inside the black cap you have to undo anti-clockwise.
