Hi all
im a new member here and thinking about buying an SLK 230 an earlier one prob 1996/97/98 in the next few months, my budget is about 8k, i have a few questions though.

1. Anyone had problems of rain getting in through the roof seal when its up? like the problems you can have on T top cars.
2. I know it will be mercedes favourable but how do the following cars compare to the SLK 230? the other considerations are an MR2 (previous shape) 98 or 99 T bar with full leather and a new shape Celica 190 proberly 2002ish, all the three options are around 8k except the mr2 which is prob about 7k, if someone has owned an SLK and one of the above cars can i have some honest unbiased opinions.
3. Is there SLK/mercedes meet ups and do you go and show your cars at car shows? i have been to japfest and the american summer nationals at billing (northampton) before but wondered if theres one you all go to for your mercedes (yet to have a good look through the site)
4. i have previously owned a Ford Probe 2.5 for 3 years and a GTO twin turbo for 6 months, i found the probe i could run and afford fine and was lovely to drive but the gto i sold as cost to much to run and insure, do u think i should be ok with the SLK?
5. Do most earlier ones 96/97 come with leather seats and cd player as these are must haves for me.

Many thanks all replies greatfully accepted.

Just one point from me, people love them, from a technical side, when you get one, do turn the PSE roof pump upside down with the modified wiring harness, should be plain sailing once you do that, and good luck on finding one

Although I love my SLK, it is not as dynamically exciting as the other options on your list. Make sure you drive one before you decide. Mine has been faultless, although the mileage is low, and it has never been touched underbonnet by any hand other than my own...

Your 8K budget is at the lower end of the market, so check it out carefully. Malcolms advice is spot on, and also look for oily residue around the air mass meter, as this can be the start of trouble. Head gaskets can weep a bit of oil from the front edge, front lower ball joints and steering dampers wear, and oil can leak from the camshaft adjuster solenoid into the wiring loom, but this is more common on the later 271 engine. Most UK cars have leather, some imports are lower spec, although I can't recall seeing one with cloth, they are probably out there. Interior trim can wear badly, as most of the plastics are sprayed with colour which can rub off in heavy wear areas.

Hope I haven't put you off!! I love mine, having first seen one in Paris - which drew a crowd as the roof was pulled back. As soon as I returned to the UK I placed my order, and I doubt I will ever sell it.....

Malcolm, is the pump located in the boot, if so where and do you have the part number reference for the modified wiring harness - i would like to update my wife's car.

Is it the same part number for all SLK230's ours is 1998

Compare, on one hand you have a car that has become a cult car still loved by its owners throughout the world (just look at the R170 sites) a real class act and on the other hand you have 2 toyotas.
