Slk Aircon Problem

My wife has a 2000 slk230 and the aircon has been playing up recently. We had the system recharged at the beginning of the hot spell and it worked fine for a week or so, then on a long trip it started to blow hot air. we took it back to the garage for a check and they couldnt find any leaks but suggested maybe the relay had gone which switches the aircon on and off. When my wife picked up the car she tried the aircon and it was working again? but after a while stopped again. Now the garage suggested changing the condenser which i queried saying that if was faulty all the coolant would leak out upon which the said sometimes not.
My question is before we go down the path of replacing each part in the system to find the fault does anyone have any experience of such problems and could offer a solution as to the part at fault

Rather than take it to the garage, try & find an air-con specialist who will correctly diagnose your problem, yellow pages perhaps?

The cutting in and cutting out would suggest the thermostat control. But would go along with rf065.
