Hi folks
Last summer I had a 2004 SLK 200 on loan from my local MB dealer. I noticed that in one of the dials there was a digital indicator of the gear the gearbox was in. I have since purchased a 1999 SLK 230 and do not see this facility. Is this something that was introduced with the facelift model in 2000.
Thanks
Stuart.

I am sure they didnt do the SLK manual until the 2000 version so it is possible it wont have one. I had a manual and that did have the small display although it was blank for obvious reasons.

That doesnt actually answer your question but it may help jog someone who can

It's the gear indicator.

My SLK is manual too, however I have driven an auto SLK.

I believe the digital readout next to the clock shows the gear you are in when using the tipshift.

SLK Auto Tiptronic

Forgive my ignorance, have never owned an auto before never mind a tiptronic, can someone explain exactly what tiptronic means and how best to use.
Thanks
Stuart.

Tiptronic

Tiptronic allows you to change gear manually on an auto box by moving the gear lever.

I wouldn't know how to best use a tiptronic box as I have a manual.
I asked that very same question in a previous post. Replies seemed to suggest that owners don't use it very often.

tiptronic is actually porsche!!!

we have auto with tip function....which means that where you see the -/+ on the gear selector, if you push the stick that way it does whatever the sign says. up or down....if you are in D on your display it will go down to what ever gear is below whatever you are in at that time if you pus it to the -

if you are in a gear say 2. and you push it to + it should change up to 3. but only if you are moving....if you are in D and you are not driving fast, by pushing it to + it will knock the gear up one too again if you are driving fast enough for the gearbox software to allow you too.

if you are in manual mode and are in gear 2 or 3 etc and you hammer it when you hit the rev limiter it will change up even if you didnt select it. however, if you have the new 7 speed auto and have that in manual it wont..it will hold it in the gear you select.
