SLK350 mmmmm
The number plate on the front of my 2001 SLK has sufferred water ingress; between the laminations along the top edge.

I think this's been caused by the enthusiastic attentions of the operator at the local car wash with his high-pressure power hose-jet thingy. Anyway, be that as it maybe, I want to replace the number plates, but I thought I might also take the opportunity to change the plastic mounts that support the number plates themselves.

The reason for this is that the mounts carry a large (about 10mm high) name check for the garage that origially supplied the vehicle. Now, they're probably lovely people at 'G.L.Gorner' but I don't really want their moniker on my car, front and rear.

Does anybody have any experience of changing these mounts?
Any idea's where I might source some plain ones?
In fact, do I really actually need them at all?
:?:

But they might have their name on it so you will advertise their dealership until you need another change;-)

you can get these housing plates from Ebay with Brabus or AMG signs rather than names of dealers

Oooooooooh, a sudden rush of adrenalin and lust.
Except, it's only a modest SLK 230, I don't want to make claims beyond my station in life.
Very tempting though.
Maybe I 'll just go and have a peep and see what's on offer on ebay. I can resist anything except temptation.

Thanks for the advice

You could also paint out or tape over the name on the plate holders

Its OK having an MB name, I will take a look in the morning to see if the name is just printed on, in which case it will just T cut off

whilst test driving test weekend I noticed that all the cars at my local MB dealer had their number plates screwed on with 4 screws with no caps on, just the bare screw head on show! Got a private plate to transfer over on my new SLK so going to make sure there fitted better and maybe with the plate holders.

Ask them for a free pair of holders, I get them free

yes will do....just couldn't believe they were using bare screws, and why they needed 4 screws in each plate is beyond me.

I know what you mean, and that looks so bad, the mumber plate holders are pre drilled and you just srew them on into the factory made holes. Just a warning on the rear plate, do lubricate the screws that go into the captive stand off pillars

Just had a look on ebay and temptation won. Bought some tasty looking Brabus number plate mounts for £17 (including carriage).

Tee-Hee.
A small thing but it excites me

That's a shame because if you go to a dealer you can get plain ones for a couple of pounds. Just tell them that you don't want to advertise their garage, I do.

Having bought my new & impressive holders on ebay I needed the new replacement numberplates, so trotted off to Chichester Mercedes Benz.

They were most helpful and did me some new plates very quickly; and what's more, at a price as cheap as Halfords.

They also offerred me numberplate holders GRATIS. I guess these little things are a great free ad for their dealership.

I'll put the new plates on at the weekend, enduring and ignoring the "Why are you bothering to do that?" scorn from The Lady of the Passenger Seat.

Simply tell her it is so the the polishing cloth does not get caught in the screws when she is cleaning it:cool::cool:
