obd11 tool.

Thanks Andrew,

Working on the theory that the oil should have stopped moving through the loom now, I'm going to keep cleaning the connectors every couple of days as its not a big job. Hopefully this will prevent any future issues.

At least I have access to an OBDII tool to reset the O2 sensor code without having to resort to visits to the local dealer!

Hi Andy, just re read your message above. I'm thinking of buying an OBD11 meter from ebay, recommended by a contributer here. Only £30 incl, small palm held type. What do you think, as I need to probably be turning the EML off several times over, like you no doubt! Owen.

Changed the Camshaft sensor and fitted the modified wiring harness on my 111951 engine a few days ago. Old sensor connector full of oil. Car seems to be running lots better now with fuel consumption improved by about 3mpg. Bit of a sod to change the sensor as the thermostat housing top inlet prevents you removing unless you remove the magnet on the camshaft which has a locating pin fitted.

Hi Nickcc101 & Rynall, thank you for the info on OBD11 reader, will have a go at that. My engine is the M111 958, I replaced the cam adjuster magnet & fitted the starter line (modified short harness) a couple of weeks ago. Like yours, sensor full of oil, particularly the one on top of the spark plug cover. Was running ok, so no difference there. I'm just washing all the connectors I can find each week and keeping my fingers crossed. I would have been lost without this site. Cheers guys. Owen.

Here we go again. Engine management light came on again after a couple of hundred miles. Cleaned all plugs and sockets and tried to clear fault codes, unable to clear codes and management light came on again on engine start up. Have now fitted new front O2 sensor (bought off ebay for £15 couple of weeks ago). All fault codes now removed and management light out, will see what happens over next few days. When i had a smell of the old sensors stripped cable there was a strong smell of burnt wiring so presume heater had burnt out.

Cam adjuster - how easy is that to change?

Hi CoventrySLK,

Cam adjuster magnet very easy to change. Plastic cover off front of engine, three "Allen" bolts to undo and magnet should pull off. I fitted the new one without any mastic etc as I reackoned that if it was going to leak again I would rather see the oil before it got into the wiring, even though I also fitted the MB "starterline". After a month no oil in sight! I have cleaned all the plugs & sockets I could find and the ECU several times and turned off the EM light, but it comes back on after a few miles. The code reader indicates code P130 & 131, the O2 sensor so I guess I need to clean/replace that or them, two I think, but the oil will take time to clear if at all and I know there are different ideas here on that. It's worth trying the simple things first and cheaper and who knows it might do the trick!! Good luck. Owen.

I had this Owen, as you know. Change the pre-cat O2 sensor and the light should stay off. On mine the oil had gone down through the connector into the sensor :(. I put one of the cheap O2 sensors from Ebay on mine and so far so good; the light has stayed off. My loom is also drying out slowly so hopefully given time, things will be ok.

After you remove the plastic plug on the camshaft sensor you then have to remove the small bolt that holds the magnet onto the camshaft. This bolt is accessed through the hole where the plastic plug was fitted. You also have to hold the magnet with a large spanner to allow the small bolt to be unscrewed. When you refit the magnet there is a locating peg that must be lined up with the magnet and camshaft. If the thermostat housing top outlet had been positioned a little to the left or right then the sensor could have been removed just by removing the three fixing bolts, good old MB. No further problems (touch wood) since i changed the O2 sensor, management light has stayed off and no faults recorded. New sensor was the cheapo ebay replacement (£15) and seems to be working ok.
