Having had an R170 SLK for about a year, and been using it as a runabout and general fun car, Madam (for it is her car) has started casting covetous looks at R171 SLKs and SLs (in both cases the models that have just been superseded in Apr/May 08 - don't know what the MB model number is for the SL).

I get to drive the MB, like Parker did for Lady Penelope, and in the R170 she likes the looks, the power roof, the comfort, speed and acceleration and the general Mercedes-Benzyness. The current red/black interior is also a winner. I like the acceleration, the looks, the way it sticks to the road and so on.

The question is, can anybody offer any opinions on what to go for? the Landrover does most journeys, and is there for the long distance lugging and 4 passenger stuff, so the SL or SLK would get used for fun. Any clues as to which engine, and how they would compare to each other and the R170?

SL any day.

SLKs look too short and not enough space inside.

The R171 is dynamically different from the R170 and, if it has the sports suspension, is very firm for the ride.

The boot maybe bigger when the roof is in it, than the R170, but it is not bigger when the roof is up.

There is a bit more room behind the seats, by about 3 inch.

Inside is is noticeably better.

I have had both. the 200K versions perform about the same, the 280 is as quick as the older 230 and 320 versions, and the 350 is alot faster. I went for a 55AMG. Different league.

The SL is a completly different car. Far bigger, far more luxurious and loads better ride.

Its also dearer.

The latest facelift of the sl (R230) is not to my liking.

You can't compare the SLK to the SL. The simple adage is, the more you pay, the better it is.

Seen a few about now, both AMG and non-AMG and it looks wrong to me. It looks like it is made up of three cars. The front doesn't match the middle or the back. Maybe we are just so used to the old one, but to me the old one is a much more balanced design.
