Hi Everyone

Just bought an SLK 230 from 1999, and the car is great etc etc, but the ride seems to be very firm! I can feel every bump in the road and im not sure if its supposed to be like this or not. And if i hit a bump in the road it really jars. Does anyone else with the old shape SLK find it a really firm ride? And if not what do you think is wrong, recently had the shocks tested and apparently they were fine. Any help would be great

Thanks

Lee

The R170 is like a skateboard compared to the R171, not bad on motorways but awful on anything else, seats do not help either.

It could be the damper on the steering column. Our's has leaked (apparently a common problem) but I've never bothered to get it replaced as it's not a critical component according to MB (think they quoted £50-60 for the part + labour). Also a 1999 registered 230.

Have you checked your tyre pressures?

I recently took it to a garage to get everything checked and had two tyres changed so i dont think its that, dont think its the sterring colum either because it just feels like the whole car is very firm, not just from the steering. The thing is other mercedes ive driven have been fantastically smooth, so i dont know if this model is firm because its a sports car or i need something sorted out, do you guys find it generally a firm bumpy ride?

I would describe the SLK as 'skittish' compared to my C230 although the suspension on that is rock solid in AG trim and sports suspension. As Gary mentions they cruise quite well on motorways but the seats are extemely uncomfortable especially if you are going any distance. The SLK has standard 16" wheels - 225's on the rear and 205's front and it's just as bumpy as the C230 on 17" 245/225 configuration.

Ive got a 2000 230K and yes they are bumpy harsh and ****** uncomfortable even on short journeys but the wife loves it so thats whats counts doesnt IT!!!!

By the way its not a drivers car either, if you want one of those you should have bought a bogster which is what I suggested but it doesnt matter what I say.
