In my R170 (old-style SLK), I have a pair of clips on the back bulkhead of the passenger compartment, behind the seats, above the stowage pocket.
They are secured to the back bulkhead by a Torx head screw or bolt.
I’ll post some photos later tonight, after I reach home (can’t post photos on this computer)
I want to remove the bolt/screw, as part of the process for fixing a perspex wind deflector to the bulkhead…I plan to take out the bolts, remove the clips, then fit the wind deflector to the bulkhead, using the clips like washers to spread the compressive load, securing them with the original bolts (or slightly longer bolts if necessary). If I also fit a pair of Velcro straps at the top of the hoops….voila, cheap wind deflector….beats the official MB R171 version priced at an eye-watering £450.
But…
I’m frightened to remove the bolts, just in case the captive washer behind them proves to be less than captive and slides down somewhere unreachable, rendering the bolt useless.
I thought I would ask here first, in case anyone had tried this, and knows the answer.
So, to the questions:
Are these bolts or self-tapping screws, or something else more exotic?
If bolts, is whatever they secure to behind the bulkhead sufficiently well secured to stay in place when I remove the bolts?
Do the clips come off easily?
And what on earth are the clips for anyway?
I’d appreciate your answers.
No rush necessary. This project is only at the planning phase. Given the ghastly weather, I’m unlikely to have the top down for a couple of months.
Thanks, Phil
