My T reg SLK suffers from a pronounced and irritating rattle from the rear parcel shelf - part of the fold-away mechanism. SOmetimes it goes away, but othertimes it is quite bad and it seems to be related to the road surface, not large road defects but the actual smoothness of the road surface.
Any ideas anyone?

There is nothing listed for this, I can give details of removing and re fitting the cover, there is little in it with regards to rattles

i know this may be an obvious statement but when i noticed a rattle it was only apparent
when driving with the luggage cover retracted. when in situ again it was fine.

My C Coupe has a similar problem (I was searching in case someone has already answered ny question).

What I have found is that in the drivers seat in sounds like a very obvious rattle, but when sitting in the back I found it to be more of a low pitched "squeek" of the shelf and housing rubbing together.

I haven't decided whether to "pack it" (in a cosmetically brilliant way of course!) or lubricate it in some way (obviously grease is not the answer, but there must be something I can apply).

Got some time on my hands next week, I'll let you know how I got on.

Both of my wife's R170 SLK230Ks rattled in the same way and MB could never fix them. Her R171 SLK350 is no better and they can't fix that either. Thanks Mercedes. Thanks a lot.

Might be barking up the wrong tree, but here is my story.

  1. Took the parcel shelf out and the "rattle" disapeared.
  2. Put it back, unhooked the line that lists it and moved the shelf from side to side - pronounced "squeek"
  3. Padded out the contact point between shelf and bodywork with a bit of tissue.
  4. Wobbled from side to side again, no "squeek"
  5. Tried polishing the plastic bodywork surface - made it worse!
  6. Cut an inch long strip of sticky velcro (the soft fluffy bit) to fit and suck it at the rear of the body work - squeek fixed
  7. Drove car - no rattle!
  8. Hurrah

It seems the soft material on the shelf gets worn and the merc fitted rubber strip can no longer do it's job. My "velcro" fix is unobtrusive as I kept the thickness the same, you could go the entire length of the shelf and it would look unspottable.

One more thing to point out, as I stated before, from the drivers seat, the silly squeek of plastic on plastic really did sound like a metallic rattle.
