Hi all,

Still having problems with my 98 SLK roof, sometimes it works perfectly but other times it goes down fine but will not come up. The boot raises but when it comes time for the roof to start coming up it will not happen and the roof switch just glows a constant red. Most of the time i can lower the boot again and if i leave it for ten to fifteen minutes the roof will work perfectly?? A couple of times i have had to raise the roof manually, which is not an easy task on your own! It seems that if i leave the car for a while the roof will work, not good if it rains. Has anyone any ideas????????????????
Thanks all,
Ross

Check that the micro switches at the front of the roof are working correctly, also check for any water ingress in the boot, the control unit there is prone to water damage - there is a simple mod which involves turning the unit upside down to fix the problem.

roof microswitches

I have had the same problem on several occasions and found it to be the micro switch for the boot lid,It is located inside the right hand slot at the back end, the wiring is very close the the boot arm when it is operated and sometimes gets pulled slightly stopping the switch making contact, If you push the wiring back towards the switch and operate the switch by hand you should hear a slight click as it makes contact.Hope this helps.

Thanks for your replies, When you say the right hand side slot Bob do you mean where the pump for the roof is? As the problem is intermittent this microswitch sounds a possible culprit.
