 Hi

Just registered today as I am collecting an SLK230 Komp on wednesday.
Wanted to ask some advice. The spare wheel looked 'funny'. When I asked the garage about it a few days later (afterthought) they said that it is a tyre designed to save space and if you needed to use it, it would have to be inflated. Great, unless you are on a motorway. The mechanic said (apparently) to the salesman, the best way he can describe it, is that it's 'shrinkwrapped'!!! Does anyone know if this is right and what's the best gadget to buy to be able to inflate it if I did need to use it. Although, of course I will have to learn how to change a tyre first!

As well as the shrink-wrapped tyre, you get a small compressor to inflate the thing. that should be located with it under the panel in the boot.
Best to check everything is there when collecting your new toy.
I'm sure you'll enjoy it no end

Yes, agreed, make sure you get the inflator (electric pump), this should be straped to the space saver tyre/wheel, also check that you have the bolts for this as well as they are shorter (well they are on mine). The pump plugs into to cigerete lighter for power.

Enjoy your car and keep us posted.:p

Hi
Thanks for your replies. Another question i'm afraid. Phoned the garage today and the inflator isn't there. Does anyone know if any inflator will work on these tyres or do I have to get a special one:p

The inflator is actually a small electric compressor to allow you to inflate the spare tyre.
If the garage won't supply you with one, you can try buying one from a place like Halfords.
Otherwise the spare wheel is redundant.
The other option is to get a foam like Tyreweld instead and just remove the spare wheel and use the extra space for luggage or shopping.
The car when new had 2 options:
1. Spare wheel with inflator
or
2. Extra space and a spray of Tyreweld.

In ours we have the Tyreweld (but in 3 years it has not been needed yet).

Reminds me of when my V70R was new, and I asked in halfords why they did not stock anything for it, The manager said, Sir, the owners of these cars do not come to Halfords.

check you car is covered by Mercedes Mobiliolife. if it isnt, get it serviced at a dealers, and they will reinistate it. then you can ring them to change your wheel. they will infate it too. but you need to make sure it has the bolts. best call in at a dealer and ask them to look at it for you. AA only change the wheel if you have one with you. otherwise they get quite annoyed.

the bolts maybe attached to the spare in a round blister pack.

take out everything in the wheel and the wheel and have a good look.

did you buy it from a merc dealer?

Had tyreweld in the smart - didn't cope well with a rip in the sidewall though. We keep a spare wheel and jack behind the seat now.
Should guarantee no more punctures.

Oh, one last thing Miss Kitty, does the car have a security bolt on the wheels? These are used to stop the opportunist thef and require a special adaptor. They are not standard and so may not be present, I say this, as I forgot to include the adaptor when I got rid of my last Merc! Someone s gonna have a problem!

Keep us posted and send some Pics.

By the way, it's not sad... I had the roof down all week on my hairdresses car and loving it!:)

Agreed, unfortunately the only person likely to have the problem is the new owner. There are a lot of adaptors out there in ther wrong hands. Best advice is have a different type fitted to each wheel.
