I have been offered a 2004 SLK with 66k on the clock for a grand, spares or repair. Have no idea what model though.
The Missus came home with the information. If it were a r171 possibly worth it, buy the r170 I thought might be too much money.
EML on and instrument cluster no working.
Is it worth the punt?

If it’s an r171 it’s likely to be an m271 engine, which I’d avoid. If its an r170 the mechanicals are stronger, but rust likely to be the enemy. Take your pick ;)
For a grand it’ll probably break for more than the purchase price as a worst case scenario

As per above ^

2004 was the change over year from R170 to R171

I'll ask the Missus to find out a bit more, what I do know is that it has had a new head gasket and timing chain.....at 66,000mls  a complete set of new brake lines as well, so sounds like a r170?

If it had a chain at 60k it’s more likely an r171 with m271 engine. Chain and sprocket eaters

Do more research before walking away from that engine - the early V6's were chain eaters, but AFAIK not other size engines. I had to do a lot of research before buying my R171 SLK280 - in Fire Opal Red, which could have been another problem - but was able to find that my engine is after the chain/sprocket problems, and the paintwork seems to be original and faultless (according to my local superb bodyshop).

A neighbour a few months ago paid a lot more than £1k for a R171 SLK200 that he's happy with!

The M272 V6 can have balance shaft issues, the M271 IL4 has chain and sprocket issues

We had a 2004 171 SLK200K did 90K miles in it nothing went wrong at all. Also had a 2010 171 SLK200K did 50K miles again nothing went wrong, except a new battery at 9.5 years.
There is an issue on a few 171's regarding the timing chain & sprockets, but its very low. Seems to occur 90K miles+ with a lack of oil changes.

There's plenty of info on here and t'other side about which V6 engine numbers had problems - I know as 2 years ago before I bought my R171 SLK280 I had to do this research to find my engine number is well after the problem ones! Personally I would not look at an SLK with less than a 3L engine - 200's come with hair brushers and dryers in the toolkit!!:p:p:D:D

When discussing potential SLK purchase with management, it quickly became obvious that "holding out for the V8" would first involve a divorce, making purchase of any SLK un-affordable!!:oops::oops: Fortunately 3L was allowable as that was what I already had in the 968.

Have you seen the prices of SLK's with V8's, more than the SL's, much more
Yes… I posted a few with the 5.5ltr engine in recently ;)

The low down is that this is an r170 SLK200
Vin WDB1704442F308992
Spares or repairs at a grand sound too much to me as I watched 2 r170's finish on the net for between £1200 and £1334 both in reasonable order.
I did pass on an SLK320 for £400 with an immobiliser issue.
If anyone is interested in this SLK I can quite happily inspect it for you or put you in touch.
