SLK220 1998 confused g/box and loss of power

Help please,

SLK220 1998 confused g/box and loss of power.

Symptoms as follows

When driven slowly and steady no noticable issues but.
When pushing on ie. setting off quickly or trying to over take looking for a boost of speed.
the engine feels like its only transmitting half power and the gear box hold revs almost to the red line and changes gear erraticly.

also thought i heard a poping from the rear of the car this monring.
This fault is not evident every time but seems worse in the mornings or late at night (air temp?)

I have heard the Air flow meter could be the problem? ithis is the first MB i have had so any details on where to find the bits you guys think i should check would be a help

Air flow meter, I have a used one £50 if your interested or MB for about £200ish or Bosch service centers for a lot less, dont buy one off ebay for £40 because they dont work.

Can they be cleaned and where are they located??

Solid black tube on right side of engine that runs downwards behind the radiator, other end runs to the throttle and rubber hose. 5-6 inch tube with connector on side and plug.
No cant clean, could try but wouldnt make a difference.

wots the milage if over a 100.00 change gear oil and filter i did this on me e class it was doing the same no its bob on now but use merc oil though £9.00 a ltr takes 7 if you can empty the torque converter mafcan me cleaned there is a link some where how to clean it up look on ebay mafs go for about 30 new
