Hi everybody,
I've got a 2001 slk230 which I bought 3 years ago and have really enjoyed driving.
Yesterday my engine warning lamp came on. Got the car down to the usual mercedes specialist garage in London (not a stealership) who have looked after it all along.
Having looked into the system log via their computer, they found that the upstream O2 sensor had shorted to ground. They explained that the root cause of this problem was the alternator leaking engine oil into the engine loom which then slowly after time affects components connected to it. They reckon that the O2 sensor in my case happened to be the first to demonstrate a symptom due to oil reaching it via the loom. They advised replacing the engine loom (with a modified version to stop this happening again), a new O2 sensor and part of the alternator magnet assembly. Bill is approx £850 all in, comprising £400 parts and 5 hrs labour at £60 per hour! Ouch!!! They advised carrying out this work asap (and not driving the car meanwhile) before some really expensive components (e.g. ecu etc) are damaged.
Has anybody else ran into this problem with their Merc (slk or otherwise)? Just want to get a 2nd opinion from you guys on their story.
Many thanks,
bern
