Hi, I have a 1999 SLK230. The interior light no longer goes off when the doors are closed. Also, the central locking switch will unlock the doors but no longer locks them!! I have checked the door switches and these are fine. Has anyone else had the same problem. Please HELP!!

I think that you have water in the rear pump Marie, this must be taken off and dried out and re fitted upside down. I believe there is a extended wiring harness as a spare part and something to stop the water running down the cable

There is lots of info on this problem here.

Same problem Ive had on my SLK (wifes actually). The PSE unit for the locking and interior light is in the boot on the right hand side. Water runs down the wiring to the plug, it the fills the PSE with water and the circuit board that controls the locks etc then corrodes, it caught early enough they can be fixed, otherwise it need to be repaced.

Ebay.de have them forsale sometimes at better prices than UK, maindealer are expensive.

Where are you in the UK?

Hi Malcolm, (television)

Thank you for advising me about water possibly getting into the rear pump, causing my electrical problem. Being a girl I don't know too much about the workings of cars, so would you mind describing where the pump is located so I can check it.

Kind regards

Marie

Check you door contacts first. Start engine, open one door & push the switch fully in, does the light go out? Shut door & try the other side. If OK look at your PSE pump. Open boot & remove carpet, spare wheel, toolkit etc. The pump is on the right hand side in a light grey foam padding. If it's wet, It'll need taking apart & drying out.

As type49 but you put it back upside down when its all nice and dry. There is a mod extension wire for this

re - SLK water in the boot

Agree with everything above, but there's also a very important last step. Find out where the water got in in the first place, otherwise, it will wet the PSE again, even if it's upside down.

The usual culprit is the boot channel drains. If you look at the forward edge of the boot channel with the lid open, you will see a plastic grille about 3 cm by 2 cm in the channel. If it's covered with leaves etc, clear it. Then make sure that when you pour water into it, the water drains out just behind the rear wheel. If it doesn't, clear the drain tube by poking a bit of stiff wire down it.

Then check the one on the other side of the boot.

And for good measure, while you have the jug of water to hand, check the drains at the top of the windscreen pillars as well (with the roof open). These drain out behind the front wheels, and if they block, it has been known for the water to get behind the instrument panel and/or into the front footwell.
