Hello and welcome,,it will be the weather, all of the engine is electronically set up,, If you are in doubt ,,just go to any MOT station and ask to put it onto the exhaust analyzer, and that will tell you all

The max gain from chipping is around 18 BHP is it worth the cost of around £250 for that bit

20mpg?..strewth

I think that you might have something wrong, (or have you been using those diving boots again?)
I get 20mpg....but mine's a SLK 32 AMG.....same body weight but a big thirsty engine
I would have expected your car to have better fuel consumption than mine by a long ways

Isnt there a point where the power to weight ratio comes into this, on the SL55 there is only 2 MPG different (worse) than the 500 but these are huge engines. we often see that the smaller ones offer the same MPG as those a little bigger.
On a run, then the smaller ones can win

Slk 230 Mpg

I've had my '01 SLK 230 for a year and it generally does about 25 to 27 MPG.

You could try a week of very genteel driving, really trying to get maximum MPG & see what the returns are, which would maybe tell you if the critical factor is driving style.

If that doesn't help then I guess it's off to the menders clutching your credit card.
