SLK320 (R170) headlamps full of mist.

Have tried the old trick of leaving the back covers off and it clears in no time, but even on hot sunny days if I pop the caps back on it mists again - with no obvious cracks or leaks. 2000 (X) reg so maybe the plastic seals around the lamps are perished ? Any ideas ?
