I’d noticed some rust bubbles on the front of the drivers side roof bars on my Smart R451 - these bars pop out and store in the boot lid when the fabric roof is rolled backwards to give the full open experience.
The water from the roof runs down the roof bar and collects in the gap between the rubber seal and metal panel (very Mercedes…
)
I managed to pull the rubber seal off without damage and ground out the rust with my dremel
Treated it to some rust treatment
Primer
Gave it some “tough black” then silver wheel paint…
I need to build it up a bit and get some colour matching silver before refitting it.
I’m also going to get some ACF/Waxoil etc in the gap when I refit the seal - I may also glue the seal to the metal as that was a “fix” by Mercedes to stop the door tops of my W210 rusting - it was recalled for that (and they never rusted in the years I had it)
