I had the same issue and I fixed it by renewing the cabin pollen filter.

Cost £28inc vat from the stealer for the part for my w202.

Smelly Air Con

I too have a musty smell when the air con is first swithed on.
I made it a lot better by running the car with air con on full cold setting, air direction to face vents, switch over to recirculate, and boil a kettle in the passenger footwell for 20 minutes. (you'll have to tape the switch down to get the kettle to stay on for this time). It appears to give all the ducts a good steam cleaning.
Good luck.

Since when has a four ring hob been available as an option?

I would suspect the cooling matrix, as the water condenses on it and then is drawn away - if it has become clogged, dirty, if the outlets are dirty or blocked. I have no idea how to reach it and how to clean it, the kettle in footwell is a good idea I guess.

Oh we need to try that with our car, I have noticed that musty smell all through the Summer but my partner said it was 'normal' for air con to do that

Men pffft!!!

Yes, Men pah! air-con is not meant to smell. I wonder who starts these rumours.

Well my partner should know better, he's a trained mechanic and was a service manager for Peugeot for years, when he's finished playing with his train set I will go and throttle him

Halfords sell a few products for refreshing and removing bacteria that builds up in the air con system. My mates BMW's air con used to smell of soiled nappies until he bought some antibacterial spray. I cant remember the name but you leave it spraying in the car with the air con on for a period of time and it works a treat.

I bought some air conditioning cleaner "biocide" spray made by Comma, £12.99 or £20.00 for two, I forget the supplier but found it online somewhere in the UK. Instructions are to put the a/c on full & recirc., set the spray in the front passenger footwell & leave for 10 minutes. Haven't done it yet but I suppose if the boiling kettle trick works, this should be even better ...
