assuming you're looking for induction &/or vacuum leaks, then no, you don't have the engine running. You're injecting smoke into the thing you're looking for leaks on & looking for the smoke escaping. If the engine was running, it would suck the smoke into the engine.

He is correct above.....

The part you are testing should of course be sealed to the extent the smoke builds adequate pressure to find the leak if any.

Perhaps you can elaborate on what you are testing and why. Not often one needs a smoke test. Leaks on air pipes are common at the ends.

Have you an EML and a code, what code reader?

Thanks a might have the dreaded broken air inlet manifold so a thought instead of stripping everything off can a use a smoke machine to check.
No lights on dashboard.
The cars running fine now after sorting out the turbo boost pipe that had split.
Still have message on diagnostics saying that bank 1 flap hasn't reach can't remember the rest but a mb specialist said that could be me problem why me turbo pipe split.
This is on a E220 cdi w212 2012 plate.

Find the exact code, otherwise its getting expensive.
You will have to take the manifold out at some stage anyway or close enough if you want to try your smoke test.

That's what a was told but just thought a smoke test would tell rather than pulling it to bits to find out that there's nothing wrong with it

Engine off!

You can usually see the broken inlet manifold bolt with a mirror as it blows oil from the pcv system all over the EGR cooler
