smoking E220cdi now sorted

Just wanted to follow up on a question I posted I while back. I have an E220cdi (2001) which smoked heavily under load. Well I changed the air filter at the weekend and now virtually not a whisp of smoke.

Air filter cost £9 from Unipart and took 2 mins to change. Thought I 'd post this as more often than not people don't say what cured the fault they had. So thank you to all who offered advice.

That is good and yes you are correct, it is much better to have a result posted, as that is the only way to learn from other people's successes or otherwise, and the main benefit of
the forum.

Wonder why a Unipart filter and not a genuine Mercedes one ?

There is more to the design of air filters than meets the eye.

The Merc spec will have due regard to optimum ariflow without letting through pollutants that can gradually destroy the MAF prematurely.

Also the fit of the filter in the box and the correct rigidity of the device (to stop unfiltered air getting past) will be of correct spec for the relevant car; and lots of other benefits.

Aftermarket specs will not achieve the optimum performance for your engine in ALL these areas.

The air filter is not just a piece of folded paper, as a 5 page article on the Mercedes specs I recently read demonstrated.

You will also be pleasantly surprised how competitive in price the proper article is.
